                     Institute for Mineral Resources
A Global Center for Sustainable Resource Development

Mining........  The industry sometimes associated with picks and shovels has gone high-tech and sustainable spearheaded by a new Science Foundation Arizona (SFAz) consortium that unites the research muscle of University of Arizona Department of Mining and Geological Engineering (UA) - led by principal investigator Dr. Mary Poulton, the Department of Geosciences, the College of Public Health, and 15 industry partners to create the Institute for Mineral Resources.

The Institute is focused on internationally competitive R&D innovations in mining technologies related to exploration, production, process efficiency, safety and health, and education, and builds upon the important work that has been done and advances already made by mining companies and academia.

• The Institute for Mineral Resources will pursue research projects  that address major challenges in reducing the environmental footprint of mines in these ways:
o Reducing water and energy consumption.
o Ensuring the saftey and health of the workforce and communities near the mines.
o Increasing the understanding of critical mineral resources and their locations.
